Multiple computers that share the same Internet connection can be controlled remotely by installing PlanetRemote Plus Edition on each computer on your local area network (LAN) and following a 5-step setup procedure.

Step 1 - Install PlanetRemote Plus Edition on Each Computer

Install PlanetRemote Plus Edition on each network computer that you want to be able to control remotely over the Internet. The PlanetRemote Plus package includes PlanetDNS Client and PlanetRemote Standard Edition .

Step 2 - Create a Unique Internet Name for Each Computer

Using PlanetDNS Client, create a unique Internet name (domain name) for each of your network computers.

  1. Right-mouse click on the PlanetDNS Client icon in the system tray (along the bottom of your screen against the right corner) and select Properties.

  2. In the Internet name field, type in the unique name you have selected for the computer. For example, name the first computer on your LAN computerA. PlanetDNS Client allows you to complete the Internet name with a default setting, or one you register.

Step 3 - Select a Master Computer

Designate one of the computer stations as your master computer. The master computer must remain on at all times, since it will route Internet connections to the appropriate LAN computers specified by remote access users.

Step 4 - Enable the VNC Multiplexor Service on the Master Computer

Verify that the VNC multiplexor service is enabled.

  1. Right-mouse click on the PlanetRemote Standard icon in the system tray (along the bottom of your screen against the right corner) and select Properties.

  2. Click the Redirector tab.

  3. Select the Options... button.

  4. The Options... dialog (shown below) will appear.

  5. Click the Station Locator™ service check option.

  6. Click the VNC Multiplexor™ service check option.

  7. Click the Station Directory service check option.

  8. Click the OK button.

Step 5 - Configure Your Router

As noted on the Ports used by PlanetRemote page, TCP Port 6800 is used when controlling multiple computers from single Internet connection. The process of establishing the appropriate connections between the Internet and your LAN computers is typically referred as by the terms Port Forwarding (Linksys), Virtual Servers (D-LINK) and Pinholes and may be completed by using your router's control panel. You will need to configure your router to accept incoming connections on TCP Port 6800 and direct the connection to your master computer's LAN IP address. For more details, see Setting up your Router to Work with PlanetRemote.

Step 6 - Configure Your Firewall (if applicable)

Configure the firewall on your master computer, if you have one installed, to allow incoming connections on TCP Port 6800. For more details, see Setting up Your Firewall to Work with PlanetRemote.

Controlling the Computers from the Internet or Your Network

You can use any local computer to control a specific PlanetRemote-enabled computer on your LAN or over the Internet by specifying its unique Internet name in your web browsers address window. For example, if we wanted to access the computer we named computerA in Step 2 above (with the unique Internet name we established through PlanetDNS Client), we would enter the following expression:

http://computerA.planetremote.com:6800

To access any other PlanetRemote-enabled computer on your LAN, enter its Internet name into the web browser address window.
